Some things the DW Design does contrarily to other kits from the company includes slightly thicker veneers, different orientation of the grain, smaller lugs, and, according to DW, the sound. The snare drum is very comparable to my DW Collector’s Series maple snare drum sporting similar dimensions. The kit ships in two boxes (five-piece configuration), and some assembly is needed. The two rack toms come pre-assembled with heads, but the kick and floor require you to put the heads on.

As mentioned throughout this DW Design Series review, DW has streamlined the manufacturing process by offering a small selection of finishes and building the drums in Taiwan. Whether it’s a full-on home interior design, redesign, staging to sell, or consultation, my emphasis is on high-quality customer service every time. The HVLT North American maple shells deliver incredible tonal clarity and projection. These drums produce a great amount of attack with just the right level of sustain. I personally don’t like lots of overtones, but these drums have just the right balance without being ‘dead’ sounding. The Black Satin finish in this DW Design Series review is striking, and makes a strong impression.
The chrome hardware really jumps off the shells and I personally enjoy the smaller Mini-Turret lugs DW has opted for the Design Series drums. It’s new to the series and John Good believes this process is what gives the DW Design the inital attack and articulation. The snare drum included with the drums is the only drum configured with the traditional HVX ply configuration as we see in the Performance Series. The Design shells are built in Taiwan; I assume this helps keep the cost down a bit. The STM tom mounts we all know and love come standard with Design Series drums.

Drawing aesthetic cues from hospitals, the new timepiece is doused in a matte-finished and monochromic look boasting a pristine white color. The integrated watch strap further explores clinical codes by drawing direct design inspiration from the bracelets that are typically worn by hospital patients.
